It is wonderful that Moneyball can make baseball figures seem to be exciting--but that's due to the fact it's not really a movie about figures, and it's not really a movie about baseball, either. It is about what drives people to consider risks--in this instance, Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt), general manager of the Oakland A's, who's just had his greatest players poached by teams that can manage to pay a great deal more. Fed up with how cash twists the game, he listens to Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), who persuades him that certain players are staying undervalued for trivial reasons--that figures expose hidden strengths that could, when used in the appropriate mixtures, produce a winning period. Beane will take Brand's advice, then has to battle everyone else around him to stick to it through. Moneyball skillfully will take the audience into Beane's psyche. Pitt is in superb sort it's an understated but magnetic performance, the sort that seldom wins awards but should. Pitt has the physical existence of a previous athlete and vividly expresses the head of a gentleman who's in no way achieved achievement but just isn't ready to give up. Director Bennett Miller (Capote) shapes the supporting cast (Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright, and other folks less recognizable but just as solid) as very carefully as Beane shapes his group. Miller has a handful of flashy (and extremely successful) moments of sound manipulation and modifying, but Moneyball is carried by its fantastic performances. --Bret Fetzer
